British Airways, Virgin Atlantic to pay compensation over price collusion

LONDON (AFP) — British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are to pay a combined 200 million dollars (136.2 million euros) in compensation to millions of passengers for colluding over fuel surcharges on tickets, lawyers said on Friday.

"Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll has negotiated a ground-breaking legal settlement that, for the first time ever, resolves a class action lawsuit on a collective basis under both US and UK law," the US law firm said in a statement posted on its website.

"The agreement, which affects over eight million people in the US and UK, provides 59 million dollars for American ticket purchasers and 73.5 million pounds for UK purchasers who bought tickets from either BA or Virgin between August 11, 2004-March 23, 2006."
