MEND leader reportedly killed, Nigeria armed group says

LAGOS (AFP) — The most prominent armed group in oil-rich southern Nigeria said said one of its presumed leaders, extradited last week from Angola, reportedly died from gunshot wounds Tuesday in a Nigerian military hospital.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said it had received "disturbing reports" suggesting that Henry Okah had died from gunshot wounds at a military hospital in Kaduna state in the north of the country.

"He (Okah) was shot in what those interrogating him claim was an 'accidental discharge' from the automatic weapon of one of the guards," MEND said in an email to the media.
