Interpol issues red alert for escaped JI suspect

SINGAPORE (AFP) — Interpol has issued an international red alert for an alleged Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) militant leader who is believed to still be in Singapore four days after escaping from a detention centre in the city-state.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said an island-wide hunt was being carried out for Mas Selamat bin Kastari.

He escaped last Wednesday from the Whitley Road Detention Centre after he was allowed to use the toilet during a visit from his relatives.

"Our security agencies assess that Mas Selamat is still in Singapore. No evidence to suggest he has fled the country," Wong said in comments posted Sunday on the home affairs ministry website.
