Rolls-Royce wins 2.6-bln-dlr engine order from Virgin Atlantic

LONDON (AFP) — Rolls-Royce, the maker of plane engines, said Monday that it had won an order from Virgin Atlantic worth 1.3 million pounds (2.6 billion dollars).

The engines will be used to power Virgin Atlantic's future fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets.

"Rolls-Royce today announced a 2.6-billion-dollar order for its Trent 1000 engines and associated services from Virgin Atlantic," the group said in a statement.

"The company also revealed that it is forming an environmental partnership with the airline to cut carbon emissions."

Virgin Atlantic currently has 15 Dreamliners on order, plus eight options to buy, and a further 20 purchase rights.

Engine deliveries were due to begin in 2011, while a long-term service agreement was included,...
