Basketball spoof 'Semi-Pro' bounces to top of US box office

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — The Will Ferrell comedy "Semi-Pro" about a hapless basketball team bounced to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend, according to final figures released Monday.

The movie, featuring Ferrell as the flamboyant owner of a team that must start winning to stay afloat, earned 15.08 million dollars between Friday and Sunday in the United States and Canada, industry-tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, resplendent in a 1970s afro, who has invested his fortune made off his one hit song, "Love Me Sexy," in the Flint Michigan Tropics. But the team is a perennial loser and with their league due to merge with the National Basketball Association, Ferrell's squad has to take desperate measures to avoid folding....
