BANGALORE, India (AFP) — Second seed Venus Williams needed three sets to advance into the quarter-finals of the WTA Bangalore Open on Thursday.
Williams survived a mid-match hiccup before defeating China's Peng Shuai, 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-2.
Venus' third-seeded sister Serena, is also one of the favourites to win the 600,000-dollar tournament, India's richest tennis event.
Serena Williams and fourth seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland had advanced to the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
"My goal is to always win a match in two sets. But I am happy I am in the quarters," said Venus, who was given a bye in the first round.
"I made amazing errors. The ball bounced high on the court. But it is okay because I adjusted to it."
