McCain 'concerned' about Basra situation

LONDON (AFP) — John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee in the United States, said he was "concerned" with the situation in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, where the vast majority of British troops are stationed, in an interview published Friday.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph from Exeter, New Hampshire, McCain added, however, that he was "very grateful" for Britain's contribution to both Iraq and Afghanistan, where some 4,100 and 7,800 British soldiers are deployed respectively.

"With all due respect I remain concerned about the situation in Basra," McCain told the newspaper.

"There are different factions that have taken over certain areas. Everybody knows that, it's not a secret, and General (David) Petraeus (the head of American forces in Iraq)...
