US urges Mugabe's Zimbabwe to respect people's will

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States on Tuesday urged the government of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to release election results quickly and respect the people's will even if it means officials losing office.
Though Zimbabwe's electoral commission has released about half the results for the legislative election it has not done so for the simultaneous presidential poll in which Mugabe is hoping to secure a sixth term in office.
"And we're very concerned about that, and believe that further delays in releasing these results are not helpful," State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey told reporters.
"We want to see the presidential vote count be released as soon as possible," he said, adding that the vote counting should be done fairly.
Asked if there are opposition-ruling party talks for Mugabe to step down and avoid violence, Casey replied that violence by any side would serve "no-one's purposes" but ...
