Woeful Knicks hand Walsh task of rebuilding

NEW YORK (AFP) — The New York Knicks introduced former Pacers executive Donnie Walsh on Wednesday as the new president of basketball operations tasked with turning the team around.

Walsh replaces embattled Isiah Thomas, but officials of the National Basketball Association team declined to discuss whether Thomas's status as coach was also under threat.

"I need to sit down with Isiah and have a meaningful basketball discussion," Walsh said on Wednesday afternoon during a news conference at Madison Square Garden.

"Then I'll know how I feel about (the coaching situation."

Walsh reportedly agreed to a three-year, 15 million-dollar handshake agreement with the Knicks on March 24.

Nine days later, the Knicks made it official.
