Tibetan nuns to greet Olympic torch with freedom songs

LONDON (AFP) — Four Buddhist nuns who have between them spent over 50 years in a Tibetan prison are planning to sing for their homeland's independence this weekend, as the Olympic torch passes through London.

Reunited for the first time since their release, they will use their voices to protest during the torch relay Sunday -- expected to be targeted by many demonstrators after the recent Chinese crackdown in Tibet.

Wearing the chuba, the traditional Tibetan dress, they overcame their apparent timidity during an interview with AFP on the eve of the relay to sing, a capella, a few verses of the "freedom song."

"Land of snows, when all Tibetans, in Tibet and in exile, unite; The sun will emerge from behind the clouds."
