HARARE (AFP) — Zimbabwe's opposition called Saturday for international pressure to force Robert Mugabe to accept defeat in last weekend's elections, fearing the president was gearing up to exact revenge.

As the Movement for Democratic Change sought a court order for the immediate release of results, its chief spokesman said President Mugabe must not be allowed to use a possible run-off as cover to strike back at his opponents.

"For Mugabe, a run-off is a strategy for retribution," MDC chief spokesman Nelson Chamisa told AFP.

"He is defeated, he wants a chance of retribution.
