Redemption for Murphy as Comply or Die wins National

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) — Former alcoholic and ex-prison inmate Timmy Murphy rode joint favourite Comply or Die to win the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday to record his first triumph in 13 attempts.

The 7/1 David Pipe-trained winner beat home three Irish raiders to give Murphy, who served six months in prison in 2002 for indecent assault after an alcohol-fuelled incident on a plane, the biggest moment of his life.

King John's Castle, the first ever finisher for trainer Arthur Moore and ridden by Paul Carberry, just failed to become the first grey since Nicolaus Silver in 1961 to win was second four lengths adrift at 20/1, while Snowy Morning, trained by 2005 winning handler Willie Mullins and ridden by David Casey, was third at 16/1.
