Brazil's Cielo sets national pool record in 100m freestyle

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AFP) — Cesar Cielo set a Brazilian national record by winning the 100 metre freestyle at the Toyota Grand Prix meet with a time of 48.34 seconds on Sunday.

It was the third fastest time in the world this year and one of the ten fastest in history in the event.

American superstar Michael Phelps finished second with a personal best time of 48.41. Phelps surpassed the 48.42 he clocked at the 2007 World Championships.

France's Fred Bousquet rounded out the top three with a time of 49.38.

On the women's side Teresa Crippen won the battle of the teenagers in the 200m backstroke.

Crippen, 17, out touched 14-year-old Elizabeth Pelton by winning in 2:12.88 to Pelton's 2:12.95. Kate Riefenstahl placed third in 2:15.32.
