Polanco's streak of perfection snapped shy of record

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AFP) — Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco made his first fielding foul-up Tuesday after 187 error-free games, his streak snapped six games shy of Major League Baseball's record for infielders.

The 32-year-old Dominican had not made an error since July 1, 2006, until he was charged with an error on a throw in the third inning against the reigning World Series champion Boston Red Sox.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers standout Steve Garvey set the record run for flawless hand work by an infielder with 193 errorless games in a row from 1983 to 1985.

Polanco's streak ended after Red Sox star Manny Ramirez smashed a fly ball to centre field. Tigers outfielder Brandon Inge raced after the ball, grabbed it and threw to Polanco.
