Kuwaitis rally against law restricting public gatherings

KUWAIT CITY (AFP) — Kuwaitis rallied on Sunday against a new law restricting public gatherings as several former MPs warned of a conspiracy to suspend parliament in the oil-rich Gulf emirate.
"What is happening in Kuwait indicates that there is an attempt to suspend parliamentary life. Kuwaiti people will not accept this," veteran former MP Ahmed al-Saadun told a public rally which was attended by around 200 people.
"They are searching for justifications to stop the elections" scheduled for May 17, the three-time speaker charged.
The law, approved by the government last week, imposes restrictions on all forms of public gatherings.
Under the law, organisers must apply in writing to the interior ministry which has the right to block any event.
