'Prom Night' carves up North American box office

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Teen slasher flick "Prom Night" carved up the competition at the North American box office this week, according to figures released by Exhibitor Relations on Monday.

The remake of a 1980 horror film about a group of schoolmates who are terrorized at their senior prom, took 20.8 million dollars in the United States and Canada, comfortably outscoring the closest competition.

Police action film "Street Kings," starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker, came in second with 12.5 million, trailed by gambling drama "21" with 10.5 million. "21" held the top spot the two previous weeks and now has taken in 61.7 million dollars.
