HK star Andy Lau ordered to pay 170,000 dlrs for damaged Taiwan chopper

TAIPEI (AFP) — Hong Kong movie star Andy Lau has been ordered to pay 5.1 million Taiwan dollars (170,000 US) to a Taiwanese airline for damaging its helicopter during filming, a court official said Wednesday.

Lau accidentally brushed against the pitch stick of the chopper, loaned by Daily Air, before jumping out during the shooting of action flick "The Island of Greed" in 1997, the official said.

The move unsteadied the aircraft, which was in the air at the time, causing its rotor blade to hit lighting equipment, said the official at the Shihlin District Court in Taipei.

Daily Air filed the suit in 1998 but the ruling was only handed down Tuesday. The case had dragged on because the defendants were in Hong Kong, the court said.
