Argentine president orders probe into massive fires

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) — Argentine President Cristina Kirchner on Saturday ordered civil and criminal investigations into massive brush fires whose smoke has caused misery in Buenos Aires.
Kirchner flew by helicopter over an area where fires raged northwest of the capital, which have been blamed on soybean and cattle farmers clearing pasture.
"I have given instructions to begin criminal and civil justice actions," she told reporters after alighting the aircraft.
"The actions must also include indemnizations against landowners, who are responsible for the damages," Kirchner said.
"The collective rights of Argentines to live in a healthier, more decent environment ... have been affected."
