Avalanche advance in NHL play-offs

DENVER, Colorado (AFP) — Ryan Smyth snapped a tie with 7:40 left in the second period and goaltender Jose Theodore made 34 saves as Colorado beat Minesota 2-1 Saturday to advance in the National Hockey League playoffs.
The Avalanche completed a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series.
Ben Guite also for Colorado, with captain Joe Sakic assisting on Guite's goal to record his 184th career point. That tied Bryan Trottier for ninth on the NHL's all-time list. Sakic needs one more point to tie Steve Yzerman for eighth place.
Aaron Voros scored for Minnesota and goalie Niklas Backstrom made 28 saves for the Wild.
