Red Wings advance in NHL playoffs

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AFP) — Swedish star Nicklas Lidstrom scored from beyond centre ice and Chris Osgood posted a shutout as Detroit advanced in the National Hockey League playoffs with a 3-0 victory Sunday over Nashville.

Jiri Hudler also scored and defenceman Brian Rafalski added an empty-netter for the Red Wings, who won their Western Conference best-of-seven opening round series four games to two.

Dan Ellis finished with 41 saves for Nashville, which played without captain Jason Arnott for the second consecutive game due to a concussion.

With 6:16 remaining in the second period and Detroit shorthanded, Lidstrom's clearing attempt from beyond centre ice bounced in front of the net before skipping past Ellis for the eventual game-winner.
