UN's Ban reiterates support for Liberia

MONROVIA (AFP) — Liberia faces daunting challenges in boosting rule of law, reintegrating its population after civil war and promoting reconciliation and national unity, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said here Tuesday.

Addressing the west African country's parliament, Ban said Liberia had made great strides in recovering from the 14-year conflict between 1989 and 2003.

But it still faced daunting challenges. "More progress is needed in reforming the legal and judicial system and extending the rule of law throughout the country," he said.

"More remains to be done in reintegrating a population affected by war, and promoting reconciliation and national unity."

The UN sent 15,000 troops into Liberia in 2003 after war that claimed some 270,000 lives....
