WASHINGTON (AFP) — A mild 4.9 earthquake hit the western US state of Nevada, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 22:39 local time (0639 GMT on Saturday), was located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains two kilometers (one mile) north northwest of Verdi-Mogul, Nevada, and 12 kilometers west of Reno, Nevada.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
