Scottish driver Franchitti injured in NASCAR crash

TALLADEGA, Alabama (AFP) — Scotland's Dario Franchitti was injured Saturday in a crash early in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) Aaron's 312 race here on Saturday.

Franchitti, last year's Indy-car series champion but a rookie in the closed-cockpit stock cars that are the most popular form of US auto racing, wrecked his Dodge when the car appeared to lose its right rear tyre on lap 10.

Franchitti's car slammed into the outer wall and spun down the speedway before a car driven by Larry Gunselman rammed into the driver's side door of the British racer's automobile.

Emergency crews took Franchitti from the track on a stretcher. The Scotsman was sitting up on the stretcher as he was being taken to a waiting ambulance.
