Disappointed Mavericks sack coach Johnson

DALLAS, Texas (AFP) — The Dallas Mavericks sacked coach Avery Johnson on Wednesday, one day after they were eliminated from the National Basketball Association Western Conference playoffs.
Johnson guided the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance in 2006 and coached them to the league's best record the following season.
But although he posted a 194-70 record in his three-plus seasons with the Mavs, Johnson's teams underachieved in the postseason.
The Mavericks wasted a 2-0 series lead to the Miami Heat in the 2006 Finals and were upset by the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors in the first round of last year's playoffs.
"It is never easy to relieve a coach of his duties, especially one of Avery's caliber," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said.
