Violence must stop for credible Zimbabe runoff vote: HRW

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US-based rights watchdog Human Rights Watch said Friday that election violence in Zimbabwe must stop if the country is to have a credible presidential runoff vote.
"Presidential runoff elections in Zimbabwe cannot be credible unless conditions are met for free and fair elections," the group said after Zimbabwe's elections commission said that opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai won the March 29 vote but did not gain the absolute majority necessary to avoid a runoff against President Robert Mugabe.
"Since the elections, the ruling ZANU-PF party, the army and so-called war veterans have conducted a brutal state-sponsored campaign of violence, torture and intimidation against MDC activists and supporters," HRW said in a statement. ...
