US backs Bolivia's unity after autonomy referendum

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States on Monday backed Bolivia's unity as it urged the government and opposition to resolve differences through peaceful dialogue, following a referendum for autonomy in Santa Cruz province.
State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey urged "the government of Bolivia and opposition to return to their dialogue and resolve their outstanding differences of concern to all Bolivians in a peaceful and lasting fashion."
Santa Cruz, Bolivia's richest province of Santa Cruz was Monday celebrating its "autonomy" after a weekend referendum, even though Bolivian President Evo Morales has dismissed the result as illegal.
