PORTSMOUTH, England (AFP) — Danny Murphy earned himself a place in Fulham folklore by heading the only goal of a 1-0 win over Portsmouth that keeps the Cottagers in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool midfielder's 76th-minute strike was enough to ensure Fulham's survival on goal difference and send Reading and Birmingham City down to the Championship.
Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed raised his fists in joy at the final whistle as his side got the win that extends their stay in the top flight into an eighth straight season.
Fulham arrived at Fratton Park knowing a win would keep them up after three wins in the last four games and the great escape after looking down and out was definitely on.
The home side are looking forward to an FA Cup Final...
