No play before lunch in first England-New Zealand cricket Test

LONDON (AFP) — Rain meant there was no play before lunch on the first day of the first Test between England and New Zealand at Lord's on Thursday.

After rain had delayed the scheduled 11:00am local time (1000GMT) start by over an hour, England captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and chose to field.

But just when it looked as if play would get underway 80 minutes late because of rain at 12.20pm local time (1120GMT), fresh showers meant the covers came back on.

The umpires decided to take an early lunch at 12:30pm (1130GMT) in the hope of getting underway at 1.10pm (1210GMT).

This match was the first of a three-Test series.
