Lebanon factions mull Qatari proposal to end crisis

DOHA (AFP) — Rival Lebanese leaders continued tense talks in Qatar on Monday over a proposal calling for an immediate presidential vote and the formation of a unity government in a bid to end a crisis which has brought Lebanon to the brink of civil war.

The initiative was proposed on Sunday by Qatar on the second day of talks aimed at resolving a protracted political impasse which degenerated into fierce sectarian fighting between Lebanon's feuding factions earlier this month.

"(Monday will) most likely be a decisive day in terms of success or failure," a delegate at the talks told AFP.

Qatar has suggested that the government and opposition politicians meeting in Doha postpone a decision over a disputed electoral law and move directly to the election of army...
