Peavy pulled for Padres due to elbow strain

SAN DIEGO, California (AFP) — Jake Peavy, the ace pitcher for the worst team in Major League Baseball, was placed on the disabled list Tuesday by the San Diego Padres with a strained right elbow.

Peavy, last season's National League Cy Young Award winner as best pitcher, will miss at least three scheduled starts before he can be reactivated May 30.

The pain has been so great in Peavy's swollen elbow that he is bothered by driving a car or turning a doorknob.

"The ligament looks fine, so that's good," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Hopefully in two weeks, the edema of the joint will subside and the swelling will subside and he'll be able to resume throwing."
