China to take Olympic flame through Sichuan before Games

BEIJING (AFP) — The Beijing Olympic torch relay will be altered to push back its passage through earthquake-ravaged Sichuan province until just before the August Games, organisers said Thursday.

The torch will go through the southwestern province from August 3 to 5, the Beijing Games organising committee said in a statement on its website.

It had originally been scheduled to pass through Sichuan from June 15-19.

Organisers said the change was triggered by the situation in Sichuan, wide areas of which were devastated by the powerful May 12 earthquake, including heavy damage to roads in some areas on the torch relay's Sichuan itinerary.
