NEW YORK (AFP) — The Los Angeles Angels will play host to the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, league officials announced Friday, marking the fourth time the event will be staged in the Los Angeles area.

A formal announcement about details of the awarding of the annual showdown between the National League and American League superstars is expected next Wednesday in Anaheim.

The Angels hosted the 1989 All-Star contest, drawing the fourth-largest crowd in All-Star Game history with 64,036 spectators.

This year's All-Star Game will be hosted by the New York Yankees on July 15 in historic Yankee Stadium, which will close after this season after decades as an iconic venue of American sports.

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the 2009 All-Star Game.
