Thai minister resigns over accusations of insulting royals

BANGKOK (AFP) — A Thai cabinet minister accused of insulting the country's deeply revered monarchy resigned Friday amid speculation that he will face criminal charges.

Jakrapob Penkair, a minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office and a close ally of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, announced his resignation during a press conference.

"I did nothing wrong, but I am resigning because there is too much pressure on the prime minister and the government," he said.

"I had no intention of insulting the monarchy. I will prove myself through the justice system."

Police said Thursday they had enough evidence to charge Jakrapob with insulting Thailand's royals.
