Schilling throws off mound for first time this season

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AFP) — Boston Red Sox hurler Curt Schilling threw off a mound for the first time this season on Wednesday as he continues his rehabilitation from a sore shoulder.

Schilling threw 25 pitches off a mound, 22 of them for strikes.

"He was excited, justifiably excited," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "When he starts talking about hitters and, 'I'm going to do this,' then he's feeling good about himself and that's exciting for us."

Schilling shut down his offseason throwing progamme in January because of pain in his right shoulder.

Doctor Craig Morgan, who performed surgery on Schilling's shoulder in 1995, recommended a procedure to repair a disintegrating biceps tendon.
