Griffey joins exclusive club with 600th home run

MIAMI (AFP) — Cincinnati Reds slugger Ken Griffey jnr became just the sixth player in Major League Baseball history to hit 600 career home runs on Monday with a two-run shot off Florida Marlins hurler Mark Hendrickson.

Griffey launched a 3-1 pitch from Hendrickson over the right field wall in the first inning to join Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa as the only players to reach 600 homers.

It was his second career home run off Hendrickson and fifth at Dolphin Stadium.

The homer also was Griffey's 202nd with Cincinnati, moving him within one of Eric Davis for seventh place on the club's all-time list.
