CLEVELAND, Ohio (AFP) — Daniel Gibson, a Cleveland Cavaliers teammate of National Basketball Association superstar LeBron James, underwent successful left ankle surgery Tuesday.

Gibson had loose bodies removed from the ankle in Houston, his hometown, and is expected to begin rehabilitation work on the joint next week with the expectation of being ready for the start of training camp in October.

The 22-year-old guard averaged 10.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 58 games for Cleveland last season, his second in the NBA.

Gibson averaged 9.0 points in 11 playoff games but the sore ankle kept him out of the last two games of a second-round series the Cavaliers dropped to the eventual Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics.
