Economic woes dog White House campaign

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The stricken US economy again dominated the White House campaign Wednesday as supporters of Republican John McCain sought to distance him from the tainted policies of President George W. Bush.

Rising gas prices, falling home values and an unexpectedly high surge in unemployment in May -- the fifth consecutive month of job losses -- have left voters reeling just five months before the November 4 presidential election.

With national gas prices hitting an average of four dollars a gallon, White House hopefuls McCain and his Democratic rival Barack Obama have been trading barbs on whose plan for an economic revival would best succeed.
