Lawmakers want answers on 2005 dope test irregularities

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US lawmakers want Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig and union boss Don Fehr to explain irregularities that could have led to overstated success at finding dope cheats in 2005 testimony.
US House of Representatives oversight committee chairman Henry Waxman and ranking minority member Tom Davis sent letters to Selig and Fehr on Thursday seeking answers on several questions no later than June 26.
The latest inquiry stems from last December's Mitchell Report on doping by major league players and revelations regarding 2004 dope tests results hailed as a sign of success in doping control during testimony on March 17, 2005.
Former US Senator George Mitchell's probe found the random test program was suspended for much of the 2004 season and that players might have been told about upcoming tests, a clear undermining of any decrease in positive tests.
