WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US embassy in Chad has temporarily moved non-essential staff to Cameroon and suspended visa services, the State Department said Monday as armed rebels waged an offensive in Chad.
"The embassy right now is functioning right now with the minimum staff and is providing services right now to American citizens in Chad as needed," Gonzalo Gallegos, a State Department spokesman, told reporters.
"Non-emergency staff have been repositioned in Cameroon temporarily. At this time visa services have been suspended until further notice," he added.
"However, the embassy is urging all Americans outside the country not to travel to Chad and urges all those in Chad to heed the (State) department's travel warning," Gallegos said.
