Protests as Jackie Chan arrives in Taiwan

TAIPEI (AFP) — Kung fu hero Jackie Chan arrived in Taipei Wednesday amid a protest over controversial remarks he made four years ago on the island's presidential elections.

Scores of protesters shouted "Jackie Chan, get out" as the Hong Kong actor, having arrived aboard a private jet, was escorted by bodyguards and local police out of the international airport near Taipei.

Chan enraged supporters of then Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian by describing the 2004 presidential election as "the biggest joke in the world."

Chen won a razor-thin re-election at the vote following an election-eve shooting which lightly wounded him and his running mate Annette Lu, but his opponents alleged that the shooting was staged to win a sympathy vote.
