US, SKorea to meet again on troubled beef deal

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US and South Korean officials were to set to renew talks Wednesday, an official said Wednesday, as part of an effort to salvage a US beef import deal that has run aground due to massive protests in Seoul.

South Korean Trade Minister Kim Jong-Hoon and his US counterpart Susan Schwab held "a two-hour informal meeting earlier today," Gretchen Hamel, a spokeswoman for the US trade representative, told AFP.

The two ministers were expected to meet later in the day, she added.

The spokeswoman said late Tuesday that Kim and the US ambassador had held "intense discussions" for a third day in the US capital and added: "Both sides remain committed to finding a mutually agreeable path forward."
