World Series winner Schilling set for season-ending surgery

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AFP) — Boston pitcher Curt Schilling, who helped the Red Sox win two World Series titles, will undergo right shoulder surgery Monday that will end his season and possibly his career.
The 41-year-old right-hander told WEEI radio Friday that he will have the operation in Philadelphia to end the nagging pain that has kept him on the injury list since spring training in March.
"We're still nailing down exactly what kind of surgery it's going to be," Schilling said. "I'm going in to make it not hurt anymore."
Schilling had Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill examine his shoulder on Tuesday, when Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Schilling's recovery had reached a "little bit of a plateau".
