ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AFP) — Houston Astros second baseman Kazuo Matsui strained his right hamstring Sunday in a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Matsui was taken out of the game after he was hurt grounding out in the sixth inning.
He had experienced tightness in the muscle in recent days and said he wouldn't know how serious the injury was until Tuesday, when Houston host the Texas Rangers.
"It just felt tight a little bit," Matsui said. "I still have a little pain in that area. I'll see how I feel after the off day (on Monday)."
Matsui, the first Japanese infielder signed in North American Major League Baseball, went 2-for-3 at the plate before departing the game, raising his average to .271.
