Fresh report of CIA jail in Poland driven by US election: Warsaw

WARSAW (AFP) — Poland's defence minister on Monday labelled a US press report which said that Warsaw allowed the CIA to operate a secret torture base for Al-Qaeda suspects on its soil as simple electioneering.

"I see it as an element of the election campaign in the United States," aimed at discrediting the Republican administration, Bogdan Klich told Poland's commercial Radio Zet.

He was responding to a weekend article in the New York Times which reiterated previously published allegations. The newspaper is regarded as pro-Democrat.

Klitch said the article was "about demonstrating (that) the administration of George W. Bush, firstly, used Iraq for its own political goals and secondly, that it violated international (legal) standards."
