Schilling surgery yields encouraging signs

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AFP) — Boston Red Sox hurler Curt Schilling had season-ending shoulder surgery on Monday, but surgeon Craig Morgan said he was encouraged by what he saw.
Morgan told the Boston Globe that the procedure to repair a degenerating biceps tendon and tears in the rotator cuff and labrum went as well as could be expected.
He also said the rotator cuff tear was not as severe as had been feared.
"The status of the rotator cuff was much better than was predicted," Morgan told the newspaper. "He did have disease in the biceps tendon, that was his major problem. We transferred the biceps tendon."
Schilling, 41, acknowledged last week that the operation could signal the end of his stellar career.
