BAGHDAD (AFP) — Two Iraqis were killed and eight wounded on Tuesday when a bomb exploded in the district council office in Baghdad's Shiite militia bastion of Sadr City, police and witnesses said.

The blast occurred at about 9 am (0600 GMT) in the southern section of the district, a stronghold of anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, a police officer in Sadr City said.

Witnesses and the officer, who asked not to be named, said the explosion took place at a time when a group of US soldiers were inside the building.

US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Steven Stover confirmed the explosion but had no other details.
