Packers say no to Favre's release request

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AFP) — Brett Favre is welcome to return to the Green Bay Packers as a backup quarterback, but the National Football League squad rejected Saturday their retired star's request to be released.
Packers general manager Ted Thompson said the club will not release Favre, which would have paved the way for him to end his retirement and play for another NFL club in the upcoming season.
When Favre announced in March he was retiring, the Packers moved on and made plans with Aaron Rodgers taking over from Favre, who is likely seeking a starting job at age 38.
"Favre is welcomed back, but the scenery has changed," Thompson said. "There may be a different role. He becomes an active member of the roster, and then we'll see how it goes from there....
