TOKYO, (AFP) — At least three people were killed when a river overflowed on Monday in the western Japanese city of Kobe, a police official told AFP.

Four others were injured after the river flooded in Japan's sixth-largest city, a police official said.

Public broadcaster NHK said that 26 people were washed away but that most were saved.

Television footage showed a powerful flow of water gushing underneath a bridge through the city as rescue workers descended on ladders in hopes of rescuing victims.
