Mahan rips Ryder Cup for "slave" treatment of golfers

NEW YORK (AFP) — Ryder Cup golfers are basically "slaves" during the biennial US-Europe team golf showdown according to American Hunter Mahan, whose stinging criticism was put on Golf Magazine's website Wednesday.

Mahan, who has never played in the Ryder Cup and stands 11th in this year's US Cup points chase, likely made certain he would not be one of US captain Paul Azinger's choices if he does not qualify on points for the September showdown.

In an interview for the edition of Golf that hits newsstands Thursday, Mahan said he did not like what he has heard about the event, the latest edition of which takes place in seven weeks at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
