NHL Oilers reunite Canadian Olympic gold masterminds

EDMONTON, Canada (AFP) — Steve Tambellini, who spent the past three seasons as vice president and assistant general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, was named general manager of the Edmonton Oilers here on Thursday.

Tambellini, 50, spent the past 17 season with the Canucks but will unite in Edmonton with Kevin Lowe, the Oilers' general manager since 2000 who now becomes the Oilers' president of hockey operations.

Lowe and Tambellini worked together on the executive staff for Team Canada to help the hockey-loving nation's global efforts.

Tambellini was director of player personnel for Canada in 2002 and helped assemble the lineup that won Canada's first men's hockey Olympic gold medal in 50 years at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
